Ooh, that's a fancy arrangement! Still, it does look a lot like the sort of thing found in pressure cooker lids if a little more advanced than the type with the gland and the lead pellet.

Steady on, this was the height of fashion in the seventies.
I don't know anyone called Luxobargewe. Is he one of the Edinburgh Bargewes?
J "Home is where you park it", so the saying goes. That may yet come true..
Err - I beg your pardon? Can you please point out exactly where I am "all wrong"?? Are you trying to say that the whole of my reply is incorrect? Given that I have one of these cars, and have done a great deal of work on it including replacing the radiator and water pump, what suddenly makes you the expert, and if you know so much why are you posting here for help? You would do well to remember that John and I have cars that run. You don't.
Mitsuru, we're here to help you, an arrogant "I know everything" attitude like yours is going to get you nowhere on here. Please exercise some respect and politeness if you want to stay on this forum.
Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

The we re all wrong was about the cap!!!!!
And even john took it in jest but you seem to be taking it as though it was
directed just at you, and as a personal insult.
And an attack as such saying
"You would do well to remember that John and I have cars that run. You don't."
Is un-called for, I try to keep all my family's vehicles going, wither or not I use
them myself.
Sorry? In what way was I wrong? I said that the cap releases pressure in the event of a fault (i.e. over-pressure) and so it does. I said it does not have a conventional spring-loaded cap (like the one you originally pictured) and you've proved that too, by posting a picture of the correct Volvo cap.
Yes, I do take it personally when you come on here for help, recieve it, and then arrogantly tell us we're all wrong.
Any more of this and you're history on here.

i had a 1995 n plate 850 2.0 20v non turbo and it started using loads of coolant then blew the radiator,i replaced it with a scrappy find rad and within 8 weeks the head gasket blew like a demented kettle wrecking the head and busting the block at no 2 cylinder wall to waterway, the gaskets dont go very often but when they go they go BIG
i suffered all the same problems as you have and my car is now a zanussi or at heinz it is dying and it will be fine then it will let you down just at the most awkward time please beware
