I had something similar with the spitfire eventually traced to an air lock in the pump. I cured it bu back filling the system using a funnel through the heater pipe

Took 3 weeks to figure it out though

If its a galvanised tank then do nothing. If its not then paint ir with black wax oil underseal. Dries to a nice satin finish but does take a while to dry and is messy to handle. Best to paint the top, fit the tank then paint the rest.

difficulty engaging first and reverse. drive OK, no problems with other gears. I'm thinking cable clutch needs adjusting but don't know the car

I have no info about graphite bearing, worked fine in K series in my Freelander, does that have graphite bearing?

The egg trick works as a get you home remedy but doing a proper job after is very very smelly. I have used KSeal twice with great success, once to fix a weaping rad and once to 'fix' a head gasket.
