Help Identifying a Car - Doctor Who 1963

#1 Post by RichardBignell »

I'm currently working on an article about the very first episode of 'Doctor Who' back in 1963, and I wonder if anyone can help me identify a car that was used in the production.

For a scene involving two school teachers following the Doctor's mysterious granddaughter back home, the production team had to use the front half a car on a framework, as this was the only way they could get a vehicle into the studio, which was on the fourth floor of the BBC's premises at Lime Grove!

For the transmitted episode, they used either a Wolseley 4/50 or 6/80 (the shots of the interior look the same for both cars), but this was actually the second go at it. The episode had actually been recorded several weeks earlier, but it was a bit of a technical disaster, so they decided to remount the entire thing.

However, in the episode as originally recorded, they used a different car. The shots you get of it are supposed to be at night, and there isn't a lot of detail, but can anyone identify what vehicle this was?

I am supposed to be writing a budget for an upcoming project but it's boring so I have spent the last 20 minutes looking at dashboards on Google images.
(you really have no idea how boring going through an amazon rainforest worth of paper working out spend month by month for a 3 year project is)
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

I've tried boosting the levels on the interior shot to give a better view. Not brilliant, but it might help.

Morris Eight with the round dials might be close.

I confess that, looking at the door in the first picture, I thought of a Morris 8. However, I couldn't find a photo of the dash to prove it either way. Certainly, it's quite a narrow car - looking at how close the passenger is to the door, yet still "near" the middle of the car. The curve either side of the dash looks similar, but I thought the instruments were different. Of course, there's nothing to say Morris didn't change them at some time!

Google really annoys me at times - I did a search for 1930s car dashboards last night and a Bugatti Veyron was among the many photos offered!

Definitely not a Morris 8, the earlier models with the round dials had all-black dials. Possibly a pre-war Standard or Hillman.

I'm currently wondering if it may be an Austin-8. Looking at the picture in the link below, the door handle appears to be the same as is the indent around the window.

I'm just trying to find an interior that matches...

To help the identification process, I've uploaded this short clip of the section in question to YouTube. The rest is just in close-up.

This could be a lengthy search, but at least we can eliminate anything with the doors hinged at the leading edge and also anything with a pendant style rear view mirror, this one appears quite distinctive and is set on the dash rail.
