My computer (AKA Dickhead) has taken to inserting dots between words and this annoying symbol, shown inside the red circle, at the end of all lines. How can I get rid of this

If you look to the left of the "zoom box" on the menu bar, you'll see a similarly marked button. Press that - it toggles the thing that shows formatting symbols etc. I agree that it's a seemingly unnecessary feature, but I suspect it helps when proof reading.

BTW: I have that mode turned on all the time for document production. It makes formatting much easier when you can see it.
