Been offered a free classic

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Been offered a free classic

#1 Post by Ian »

My boss has offered me a Rover 90 as a restoration project, just wondering how desirable these cars are in good condition and aside from the usual tinworm, any pitfalls to look out for? Cheers guys

Look at it from this point of view: it's free!
If you like how it looks and smile when you think of driving it, hire a trailer and drag it home.
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

I'd say they would be pretty desirable in good condition, yes. A Rover 100 or 110 might be slightly more desirable, but all of them have beautiful silky smooth engines, and it's not a performance car anyway. I love these, real classy solid British classics, lovely wood-and-leather interiors, a "proper" Rover, if you know what I mean. I think it could be fairly challenging to restore, although probably not bad for a man of your calibre. I believe that spares are not too hard to come by, although you'll have to watch out for the usual lousy quality of modern reproduction parts.

Have a look on the classic sales sites and see what they go for - although I expect you've already done this.

Get it bought (well, "acquired")!!

Oh, and lots of pics please..... :D :D :D

I had a Rover 60 in the mid 70s and had intended to restore it. However, it was a rusting hulk that needed welding that I couldn't do or afford. I'd spent a fortune on brakes and was looking at another fortune for suspension when the front crossmember decided to disintegrate as I was going up our drive. I was lucky - I'd been doing 50 - 60 MPH a mile or two earlier!

A 90 is more powerful than that old 60, which wouldn't be a bad thing, but I did love driving that old rust heap and was sorry that it had to go. OTO?H, I bought an S4 Minx to replace it - one of three cars that stick out in my motoring history!

I suspect many parts will be similar to Land Rovers, so many spares should be available off the shelf! I certainly saw plenty being broken for parts when I was looking for a classic last summer (I was very tempted by a 100 or 105 that was almost local - but it was too expensive) - so I suspect body panels etc will be available without too much hassle!

Crikey, I'd like to restore most of those! I hope they all find a good loving home....

You will have to post some links to the adverts when they do. If nothing else, I (and i'm sure everyone else) would be interested in seeing that collection where it sits :)
