From the Budget:
2.148 VED: classic vehicle exemption – The Government will extend the cut off date from which classic vehicles are exempt from VED by one year. From 1 April 2014 a vehicle manufactured before 1 January 1974 will be exempt from paying VED. (Finance Bill 2014)

I'm curious how this works if you need to tax a car that's due to become exempt in April. Do you still get charged for the full 12 months? If so, will you get a refund next April or just lose the extra months? Anyone in this position?

You could always cash in the tax disc and then re-tax it at the exempt rate.

I thought you had to change taxation class from PLG to Historic Vehicle yourself and that it wasn't done automatically. It's might be different with tractors (having been "Agricultural Machines" and zero rated VED), but I had to apply for "Historic Vehicle" for both my "Agricultural Machine" class vehicles when I changed to "HV". I could have kept the "AM" rate, but that's a different can of worms!

It's a while since a PLG vehicle went through the system automatically, but I wouldn't have thought the computer would be programmed to send a letter out on the day of the changeover and may not even be set to "catch" vehicles that have come into "HV" category when their VED is due.

AFAIK you are correct when you say you have to change the taxation class from PLG to Historic, it's not done automatically. Call me a cynic but I bet there's a few who won't realise and carry on paying road tax (Sorry VED) as the change doesn't happen automatically.

I seem to recall Fuzz of this parish having to pay to tax the Daimler he rescued as it was still PLG, then having to change it to Historic.

15 years (and around 3 grand) ago when my 73 car was 4 months away from getting free tax I had a letter telling me what to do, I seem to remember you had to tax it and then apply for a re-fund as described above, of course I never did it as the government changed and it was abolished, I have everything crossed that this lot manage to hang on past April next year!

Don't know how we will get them re-clasified though as they ususally insist on an inspection and all the local offices will be closed by then.

It will probably be relegated to your local VOSA testing station or MOT tester. I'm sure some bureaucrat somewhere has thought how to do it in the least convinient way.
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

I don't know if you will need to have the vehicle examined. As long as the registration date is on the V5, the DVLA will know the age and, when you apply for change of classification, it should just be a matter of posting the V5 back with "PLG" crossed out and "Historic Vehicle" written in and including the tax disc. At least that's what I had to do with both tractors! It seems daft - I had to tax the last one before I could drive it home (26+ miles on a tractor at 14MPH). Then I had to wait for the new V5 and then send the disc and altered V5 back to Swansea and wait for another V5 and tax disc!

BTW - I called it VED to save typing "car tax" in full!
