Choosing a Spray Gun

#1 Post by r6gcc »

Hi All
I know this may have been asked before so apologies to those not at all interested

I have been looking for a while at the options on offer and whilst I did consider a second hand gun of a higher quality I am always worried I'll end up spending more on it to get it working right in the long run.
I have a decent 3 hp belt driven compressor giving around 14cfm 100 litre tank, air lines are sorted filtered x2 with drop sections and drain etc. Runs all my air tools well and I don't seem to get any water in the line issues (I Hope )

I need to get myself sorted with a decent gun but want to keep the price down to below £100 as I have been hitting the budget far too much on this re-build

Any way I have narrowed the choice down to two ...unless I am heading down the wrong route
DeVilbiss FLG5 - 1.4 Gravity Compliant gun or............best price 76 so far delivered inc vat
IWATA Airgunza AZ3 HTE MKII 1.3 Compliant Gravity Spray Gun.... best price so far 81.50 delivered inc vat this one seems slightly less air hungry than the former in the spec sheets

Will be spraying celly to start with and possible 2 pack when I get the safety gear as I have another small compressor for an air feed if required. I am intending to buy another "cheaper" gun for the primer work and keep them seperate.
Would appreciate any pointers from those who either have one of these or know their onions and can point me in the right direction, also if there's anywhere worth looking for a better price etc.

All the best Glyn
:D
I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

Both are good quality brands. With a compressor that small, you may want to consider an LVLP gun.

Honestly, with a decent compressor, you can shoot good paint with a pretty cheap gun. Go to www.autobody101.com for reviews.

Hello There.

I can only agree with the the above, Both of the guns you mention are pretty good and it does feel nice to use a quality gun.
On the other hand you can get great results from the 'fast-mover' mini gravity gun which cost all of £20. Especially as you are spraying celly which more often than not means getting the finish from the polishing cloth. A lot of HVLP guns when used with H-Solids materials give a 'puddingy' finish which is machined with 2000grt after curing.

But it is horses for courses, and like I said it feels nice to use a quality gun -they are easier to control and adjust to suit your hand. And when it is set up just right this will bring out the best in your spraying ability.
