sat nav

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Why not repair your tomtom? I have replaced both my battery pack and the screen with parts from ebay.
(it's pretty old and didn't appreciate being dropped)

the mood im in it will be on the fire in a minute  the maps and radar sites are out of date & the cost of the updates is more than a new machine.. although the thought of stripping it down sounds interesting :D

It's a bit pointless buying a standalone satnav these days, especially as you can use Google street view on your phone for the navigation. Accurate, real photos in the areas that have been covered by Street View cars and good maps elsewhere.
Plus you can use Anna Friel's voice to tell you where to turn. Seriously, you can. She's on mine, saying "In 350 yards, turn right up sh*t creek in a barbed wire canoe." Pure class. :D

I'll see whether I can grab a sound sample later. Trouble is that every time she talks at me, I come over quite emotional and end up having to take a rest in a secluded car park, surrounded by others who obviously did the same.

If you've been using tomtom then stick with them, I changed to a navman I think it was and everything was arseaboutface to the tomtom and it wasn't as user friendly, so I ended up buying another tomtom and have stuck with them ever since. Like you say, it's a pity they charge so much for updates etc, however try http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/ for scamera and talivan updates, cheaper and more reliable than tomtoms own.

Google maps are free though, as is the software to run them under Android navigation, a phone with a big screen and the ability to run navigation costs from nil on a £15/month contract which includes calls and SMS too, so either way not only do you get the photographic maps and the voices, you also get something that isn't so limited.
