I was going to start my own but instead I have signed the above petition. I believe speed bumps are only appropriate in car parks or places where a speed limit of under 10mph is in force. We have lots of speed bumps locally, where the speed limit is 30mph. Surely the method of enforcing a 30mph speed limit is a camera? Added to this, many of the boy racers see speed bumps as an object of amusement.

The speed bumps all along the village here were removed and other measures (a camera and several of those things where you have to give way to traffic coming the other way) installed earlier this year, which came about as a result of the council's realising that claims for damage to vehicles' suspension and steering were costing them more per year than the cost of ripping them out, resurfacing the road and putting up the camera and new signage.
The next village along the coast is to have the same thing done next spring and about time too, though it won't happen soon enough to prevent the usual frost-induced damage to the humps themselves which, when roughly patched to treat the damage on a yearly basis, became even less pleasant to drive over.
During the first few weeks after the measures were taken, the local traffic polises spent a disproportionate amount of their time stopping kids in modified hot hatches and dishing out fines for speeding but the general standard of their driving has now risen sufficiently to make the plod's presence a much less frequent one.

I would welcome a speed hump or two down this road,as there is some pond life down the road that thinks it acceptable to blast along at 80 mph in his Fiat Punto

Same where I live- they've put them on the main road where they're not required (well, they're sort of car-length raised sections rather than bumps) but on the estate where I live we've been begging for them for years but with no result. The road around the estate has four sharp corners- all we want is a bump before each corner to slow the prats who think they can belt round it like it's the 'ring, just so they don't hack round a blind corner.........parking is tight, the road is one-way and narrow, and there's a lot of kids around on bikes or scooters or playing kerbsies who can't always judge the speed of vehicles, yet there are still people who think that because the limit is 30 that's what they're going to do.

Granted a speed limit of 30mph maybe inappropriate in a residential area, especially since, as pedestrians, people seem less able to cope with traffic these days. Nobody seems to look anymore before crossing the road; if they hear nothing coming, that's enough
. They seem to forget that roads are for motorists and cyclists etc.

Speed bumps eh? Ridiculous! They make me go slower, if anything......

Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Re: Anti speed bump petition.
I can't stand the bloody things, and there's no standard for 'em aside from a maximum height I believe (and I only know that because I remember K&C council being bollocked for exceeding it.) There's some around here that you can glide past by placing your sheels right, others that you waft over at the right speeds, and some that if I try going faster than walking pace in the Allegros, the suspension cries in pain for hours afterwards. Considering all the emphasis on maintaining steady speeds to reduce CO2 emissions from acceleration, surely speed bumps are now contrary to doctrine?
…that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today.
