this a fly in the ointment! Petrol & diesel cars banned by 2040

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Petrol and diesel cars banned from UK roads by 2040

The sale of petrol and diesel cars will end in 2040 - with a new tax on diesel drivers from 2020.

Spraying Greenland with high density poly peanuts to reflect the sunlight away from that black algae that's been all across the news would work, apparently.
Fossil fuels being banned by 2040 could work if hydrogen outlets became more common - just now fuel cell vehicles can only be refuelled in a handful of places across the UK, more would set aside range anxiety and suddenly, we'd forget that we ever had such a concern. Win!

However, this "news" story is designed to alarm social media's sans-culottes crowd and besides, this disturbing image makes more sense than the story itself, IMHO:

Mam, make it go away, it has a really scary pud on its face.
Bollocks? Of course, and maybe Trump isn't driven solely by paranoia when he speaks of "fyke nooze?"

does this mean electric only cars? or will the push be to hybreds?

The evans on radio 2 was suggesting that this is a scheme to ensure purchase of cars as projected life of cars is increasing and otherwise there would be little need for new cars in 20 years as there would be a glut of used vehicles that would remain perfectly roadworthy.

Where's the tax revenue in that?
Currently over 35 years worth of fixing 35 boxes.
Hoping to reach 65 years worth of fixing 65 boxes.

All these policies are formulated on the hoof by politicians with degrees in politics and law. Here's a few practicalities to consider.
1. The quoted ranges are measured in the laboratories and vehicles are designed to give optimum results on the test cycle. Real world ranges will be less, maybe a lot less. If you look at the specifications for electric vehicles, the battery capacities are only sufficient for 20-30 minutes at full power, for example the Nissan Leaf has a 30kWh battery and a 66kW motor, that's about 27 minutes.
2. If battery capacities are increased to give more range, then the charging time will increase proportionately because the charging current remains the same, in the same way that a bigger petrol tank takes longer to fill.
3. What will happen to the electricity network when everybody arrives home from their commute, puts their EVs on charge, their dinner in the oven (probably electric by then) and settles down in front of Eastenders?
4. How will people without off-street parking cope?

My thousandth post!! Do you really think enough infrastructure will be provided for every car that needs to be parked on-street overnight? The nightmare scenario is that the unfortunate will be cruising round looking for a charging point until the battery goes flat. Also, the vehicle manufacturers can't agree on a standard, so you have to find a point that is compatible with your car.
