A 59 is rather an early one as a starter VW,very lovely but 6 volt electrics and spares/trim more readily available for later models.

The man speaks sense. Bigger than a Mini, cheaper, more room under the bonnet to work on and inside the cabin to relax in.rich. wrote:austin allegro anyone? or an austin 1100
…that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today.

Then modify the engine to a 1380 Turbo and watch it go. Don't know if anyone's done that to an Allegro, but I'm itching to do it to a 1275 Marina.OneCarefulOwner wrote:The man speaks sense. Re: first cars ideas
My first car was an old Vauxhall Chevette hatchback. Well, someone had to have one and it was only £200. It was also indistructable and on one occasion performed community service by pinning a military policeman to a fence!
Then I had an MBG GT, which taught me how to grind in valves when it blew a hole in one.
And a clubby estate.
Sadly, I'm also addicted to motorcycles (Ducati 748, 1982 GPz550) but on a recent tour of duty in Denmark I was driving a Mk2 Golf with over 400,000kms on the clock.
Don't do it.....you'll become an addict!

Re: first cars ideas
No-one's turbo'd an A-series Allegro yet, but we have got a club member with an A+ SPi engine & he's had 67MPH in 3rd, no reports on trying it in 4th yet! I wouldn't bother doing it to a Marina unless you've also done a Type9 5-speed conversion; there's too many other upgrades possible, from MGB lumps to the guy who's fitted a 16v head from a Vauxhall iirc! Marinas are just too big, heavy, & lumbering to get the most from any A series.
I'm having help in fitting a non-standard engine to an Allegro estate; more details will emerge in the future for those who don't know about the project already, but I don't want to say too much as there's articles being based around it & I'd hate to spoil the surprise for those as yet unaware!
I've also toyed with uprating the lump in my S1 auto, as the box saps a little power giving it a lower top speed than the 998cc S3!
