Is the aerial properly earthed? I presume by static you mean ignition interference. AM and long wave in particular is prone to interference and you can't be getting a very strong signal in France. Did the problem appear suddenly after any work you had done?

That's the first thing I'd be checking. There are of course other potential sources of interference but start with the free stuff and work dearer from there! ;)

In the windscreen heating element perhaps, or the rear screen element? Beware the element in the room.. ;)

great news chaps! i was clearing stuff from the car & found a pp3? style battery connector that had disconnected from the side rear window.. popped it back on & radio 4 works again.. i am one very happy rich :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
you really don't know how bad french radio is, im sure there is only 5 records in the country & the play them over & over until you get the rope & want to hang yourself...

I could be wrong, Rich, but I believe that the correct way to "work" an iPod is by heating the device in an oven at 230C for two hours.
