When I was a puppy I used to play a bit of classical guitar, even took a few grades in it. I find now that my fingers really don't work well enough and my left wrist get pretty sore (touch of arthritis I think given theres a couple of little nobbles where they didn't used to be).
Anyway, I find nowadays, that standard tuning from an electric tuner, and simple basic Barre chords plus a traditional E, say a traditional low non Barre open E and then Barres of F A B C D E in their variants of sharps and flats / minors and sevens, played between the first fret and the 12th work well for most tunes I want to murder.
You can get all the noise you want when playing alone by varying the rhythms and laying on and off the chords as you go to add more sound / rhythm variation.
Only downside is I can't get a Carter lick going for country but even then those simple chords lend themselves nicely to any variant from Country through to Rock.
Anyways, If some of you don't already do it this way this video I found on Youtube shows it in the most simple way
