from what i understand from the ad the engine needs a rebuild for the bottom end.. is it easy enough to do??

That depends why it needs a bottom end rebuild. If the engine has light wear and just needs freshening up with new bearings, rings and the bores honing then it is a nice "easy" DIY job. If it is more heavily worn and in need of a rebore / the crank machining then it is a job for a machine shop. Taking the engine apart yourself will save you money in their labour.
Pulling an engine and taking it apart isn't amazingly difficult. I have done Rover V8s, A series and Ford Zetecs. If I can do it, anybody can as i only owned basic tools until a year or so ago.
As long as you know all the torque settings for putting them back together nothing is impossible. It is much easier working on an engine with it on a bench than fiddling under an MR2 trying to replace an alternator 3 times

I have bought a "ruined" 3.5 rover v8 for £40 to use as an exchange only to find that the firing order was wrong and it was actually fine. Often people think something is forked when in reality it is just not put together properly and a few minutes with a manual and some spanners will have it back working perfectly.

Fair point, I don't know. you would certainly be able to hone it if the problem isn't too bad and the bores are within spec.
You could probably get a known good used engine to sling in it while you worked out what was wrong and the best way of sorting it out.

ive been hinting to wifey & leaving copies of the ad around the house she has been sharpening her butchery knives.. car is not far from me & ive seen it about in summertime & it looks quite tidy
