Now that's the sort of thing we ought to see more often at car shows.

No idea what it is though ;) , but I wouldn't be too disappointed to look out one day and see one on my drive.

You'll be lucky, it's the only one known to exist in the UK!

Am I the only one who when seeing a car of that style thinks of themselves wearing a black suit and holding a tommy gun, standing on the running boards while the car is being driven very quickly?

no? just me then.
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

There's a first time for everything! :)

Google image search, may eternal damnation be visited upon you for your liberal interpretation of the term "European classic cars unique in the UK", which I hadn't imagined would yield a Datsun Leaf, three Morris Marinas and countless MK2 Cortinas. :?

No? just me then.
 If it helps, I'll try to imagine you doing all of that, but I'll need to assume that you look like Reg Hollis out of The Bill, otherwise the whole idea just doesn't work for me. :|

Indeed it is. At one time they were the fourth largest manufacturer in France. They went out of business in 1946.

I have absolutely no idea what the car is but if memory serves Bentley dominated le mans in teh 20s but the first proper 24hr was won by (something like) a Canard Walker (sp?). That was French so is it one of them?

Well done that man! It is actually a Chenard-Walcker but you're right about Le Mans. I shall have to trawl my photo archives for something a little more difficult. :)
