Auto adjusting piston problem

#1 Post by Diesel Fionn »

I've stripped the rear standard brake caliper on my 1991 Mazda MX5. However in the rebuild kit they supplied a new piston. HOwever there is a problem. the existing piston has the auto adjustment function and I started to strip it but I can't remove the inner parts bar the circlip and spring. having decided to just clean up and keep the piston, I can't get the spring back into its hole.
So now I may as well strip the the piston. Is it just a matter of using a puller to extract the innards from the piston, or will I damage it?
Any ideas please? :(

From memory I think you need to manipulate the hand brake arm to enable the piston to be removed.
I would really recommend reading a manual to understand how it works

Or, visit nutz and search/ask

Still no details of piston internals

hI Kevin thanks for the information but the thread doesn't show how to strip the inside of the piston, just the cylinder and caliper which i've done already.
I'll try searching a few more forums myself but i was hoping to find someone who has done it already here.

From the pictures in the link the base of the axle that the star adjuster mechanism is rotating on is just pressed in. The only way i have to pull it is to screw in the adjuster and pull the centre axle out with the puller. Hence my concern about stripping the threads.
