i find that on really icy mornings (05.30am), 15mins of my car running defrosts it nicely, i get over the security issue by getting wifey to sit in the car
I live in middle of Saskatchewan (after living in Africa) we get -40C a lot (aaargh) All vehicles here have electric 240 ac volt block heaters.You have 240 v ac outlets on the side of your house with timers set for 4 hours. At work most places have poles or such with plug points on them. You also have a connector cable preferably long .Many people have remote starters which means at knocking off time everyone points the gadget at their car hits the button and it starts whilst locked and is then left to run for 15 minutes so all is toasty. There is also a black box that has to be installed by someone clever or all the electrics act strange - (most cars and trucks have automatic gearboxes so this helps ) My 14 year old Sienna van starts fine but my old 30 year GMC truck ( 2.5 4 cylinder - now officially antique) needs block heater from -17c down or starter will not work. Your battery must be 100 % or you are done. The snow and ice are another story.
gets a bit nippy then?? i can see that it would be needed where you live, but back in blighty with our lovely weather its not that useful.. id rather have heated seats
