Antifreze
Re: Antifreze
Stick to Mono Ethylene Glycol-based stuff unless you have a leak and cats - who can be killed by as little as one teaspoon of the MEG stuff, it takes much more to kill a dog however - in which case use something based on Propylene Glycol. One of the best brands of MEG-based coolant is Fuchs "Eskimo" available from any Silkolene stockist, good old Bluecol is still available and is equally good as are the MEG products from the likes of Comma and Esso.
There's no point in using OAT stuff (sold as "long life" coolant concentrate and typically claimed to last five years vs the two you'd get from a 33% MEG mix, though check the label as some MEG is intended to last longer) in older engines as it finds holes where none were present before and just that lethal feline dose of MEG remaining will react with OAT added to it and form a lovely gel that'll block the most expensive and/or the least accessible part of the cooling system, it also attacks carbon water pump seals, soldered joints - where flux might still be lurking but had hardened over the years in contact with the harmless [to old, solidified flux] MEG - and older heater valves with natural rubber seals.
