Lotus were well know for their parts-bin approach to car design. This has good and bad sides. In my case its seems to offer the only hope of a solution! I have a 1980 Elite S2.2. The tailgate lock on this car is now U/S and replacements seem unobtainable- its simply not made any more. As Lotus produced only 135 of these cars, waiting for a functioning used lock to come up is a hiding to nothing! However this lock must have been used on some other cars - and hopefully on some that were made in higher volume. The same lock is used on other Lotuses- the Eclat S2.2 and the Excel, but again these aren't common as a source of used components- and sadly the company has no information on the locks use by other manufacturers. It seems to have been made by Wilmot Breedon, so does anyone know what else it was used on? Suggestions I have already received are the mini (not right) Talbot Sunbeam boot and the bonnet lock on a landrover 110 pre 1986. However neither of these have been confirmed and the only pictures I can find don't look right.
Any help gratefully received!
Thanks
Mike

Re: Lotus parts bin-locks
Mike, Google a company called Morlands. They were very helpful to me regarding a Wilmott lock a while ago. I recollect that their email address or url was emorlands.com but I may be mistaken.

Re: Lotus parts bin-locks
It was Chrysler, (pre-Talbot) Sunbeam, and they were fitted through the rear glass with a clip that incorporated the place to put the finger when lifting the window. Also found on Reliant kitten and MK1 Robin saloon rear windows, possibly some Imp saloon rear windows too, but that hasn't been confirmed as identical. The Chrysler Sunbeam was - on the old forum - but funnily enough, there's no way to link back to that.

Thanks All- went to Morlands and they did an excellent job of restoring my existing lock. I had thought it beyond repair but its back now, in the car and working great!
