Re: IT Help Required
I've cleaned the CD and it hasn't made any difference. It's unlikely to be scratched or dirty as this is the first time it's ever been out of its original packaging.
I don't see how there can be a problem in reading it anyway as I can see the files on it with Windows Explorer!

Re: IT Help Required
Being able to see the files and being able to read them is not the same thing.
you can copy the CD to a folder on your hard drive and run setup if you like, that would acchieve the same thing without the read errors assuming that your machine can read the disc. From the error you reported it sounds like either the disc or drive is faulty.

Re: IT Help Required
From one of those PC's I have rebuilt in the past year ...... I recall that there was virus or trojan (dunno the diff) that reported (spurious) read errors as if disk failing.
Cant recall the exact history - but it will help if the PC is booted up from the CD, ie rather than the CD inserted once it has booted itself up & loaded up any cr@p etc. Might need to tweak BIOS to boot from CD.

I copied the CD to the C drive and ran setup from there. Same result - "A disk read error occurred"TerryG wrote:you can copy the CD to a folder on your hard drive and run setup if you like,
I have no idea how to make it boot from CD.
Re: IT Help Required
That's usually a case of pressing F2 as it boots to enter the boot device selection menu.
If there's no separate boot option, just go straight to bios and change the order from there to CD, internal HDD, floppy and so on. Disable every other option temporarily if it still tries to boot from the first HDD partition.

Where in Yorkshire are you? I'm in sheffield once a month or so for work so if you are down that way i could pop in with my hammer and knock some sence back in to your PC.

Re: IT Help Required
I got it to boot from the CD and it started to reload Windows XP but got stuck half way through. No matter what I try the PC will not do anything but restart the Windows set up process when it's switched on and gets stuck in the same place - i.e. asking me what language I want to use but I can't reply because both the mouse and keyboard stop working by this point in the process.
Anyway by the end of yesterday I had become so sick of the problems that I have been experiencing that I went out and bought a new PC today! The problem is how do I recover my data on the hard drive of the old PC?

Re: IT Help Required
if it will not longer boot in to windows (if it does just use a USB stick) you can download Knoppix (a handy type of linux that runs from CD) and boot from that, then you will be able to browse your hard drive and copy any files you need to USB stick and move them over.
http://knoppix.net/ (click the "Get Knoppix" button)

Re: IT Help Required
Knoppix is a bit bloated for a machine that sounds like it's struggling to run XP, better bet is LuPu, available here. It runs from RAM on a per-session basis and in a case like this, where the o/p's machine has probably fallen over as a result of a boot sector infection, is better than trying to run any distro from CD, which they'll all do but - in the case of Knoppix - so slowly that you'll pull your hair out and grow it all back up again before the live CD starts to allow you to do stuff at reasonable pace.
Without intending any offence to the o/p; as he - quite openly - admits to not knowing how to open his machine's bios or boot selection screens, I doubt that Knoppix would appear all that clear.
Other disadvantage in terms of using a live Linux to import material via a shared clipboard to an XP machine: Knoppix won't communicate with NTFS partitions, LuPu will.
I'm confused about this though:

How is this going to solve the problem?EricTheRed wrote:by the end of yesterday I had become so sick of the problems that I have been experiencing that I went out and bought a new PC today!

Re: IT Help Required
Somehow while I was fiddling about with my old PC trying to follow the advice given in this thread it decided to boot up into Windows XP !!! I can offer no explanation!
Anyway I have been able to download all my data onto a couple of DVDs so I can load stuff to my new PC as and when I need it.
Thanks to all those that tried to help.
