Re: Classictyres.com - Hi!
Thats a tricky one I am afraid - 13" radials have become much less available recently. There are a lot of Ford guys who like the wider 13" sizes like 225/60R13 as well who are struggling!
With 5.5" rims you cant really go much wider than 195, so even though Michelin do make a 205/70R13 it would be a bit wide for the rims. Sadly, the 185/70R13 is going to be the best compromise from what is currently made. 195/70R13 was not fitted to many things so it is unlikely there will ever be the demand for it to come back into production either.
I expect this is the answer you have already found - I am sorry it is not better news!

Re: Classictyres.com - Hi!
Thanks for that. I didn't know that there was a 205/70 R13 though. I wonder if it would be worth having the wheels banded by, say, an inch and fitting the wider tyres. Probably not worth the bother if the 205s are going to disappear sometime soon.

Would 205s really be a problem on 5.5" rims?

Re: Classictyres.com - Hi!
There are a couple of problems - whilst Michelin do make the 205/70R15 in their XDX pattern, it is kept alive for a classic Alpine performance car (I forget which) and made in tiny batches - and therefore very expensive at £285 +VAT each...
Also in 13" 205 is a bit on the wide side for 5.5" - for larger diameter wheels it would be a better fit. You may get away with it though - with a fair wind.. but as the only tyre in the 70 profile is the Michelin it is an expensive option. 205/60R13s are fairly readily available, but at about the same height as your 185/70R13s they wouldnt achieve what you wanted.

Re: Classictyres.com - Hi!
We have the Vredestein Sprint Classics in stock if these are the ones you are after - they have a higher speed rating (H-130mph rather than S-113mph) than original and a classic appearance. They are £113.40 incl VAT with free UK mainland carriage.
Otherwise, the more budget tyres have dried up a bit at the moment - we normally have Toyos and Barums in stock, but they are both on back order - if you are lucky someone may have some left on the shelf.

Hi Charlie, this is going to be a tricky forum for you..fielding questions from all sides in the same thread
Anyhow while you're here, I was interested in your comment that 205s on a 13"x5.5" rim is a bit wide but may be a better fit on a larger diameter wheel, how so?
I'm interested in this as most tyre/rim charts say that my 5"x15" rims are too narrow for 205s yet I know of lots of people doing so (even 4.5" rims) with no apparent problems. Is the profile a factor in this?
This is brought about mainly due to the dearth and expense of 185x15s here in Australia.

Re: Classictyres.com - Hi!
Just that the larger diameter gives you a bit more flexibility to help stretch the tyre on. I expect you would be able to get them up ok but it would be outside the manufactures recommendations.
Different manufactures do differ a bit on rim recommendations - I wouldn't say your 5x15s are necessarily too narrow for 205/70R15s; I have Avon's list in front of me and they say you can fit a 205/70R15 on a rim anything from 5"-7" wide.
I don't mind fielding tyre questions - it is what I do all day long! Coming back to the first post and the picture of my camper, I just saw a fellow owner write on facebook something which i quite liked... "In this sunny weather, why just drive to work when you can take the bus?"
Thanks

Re: Classictyres.com - Hi!
165-80x14 are now pretty rare and so seem to attract a premium - but I reckon that 185-70x14 are same diameter, may fit OK, and are much more obtainable. 185-70x14 is used on new /poverty spec Vauxhall Corsas. I had the same dilemma for my Datsun - ended up with Avon ZT3's that are excellent but about £50 each fitted by ATS. However not everyone wants fatter tyres on their old car.Mr.5T wrote:I need to replace the 165/SR/14 tyres on my 1973 Audi 100, what are my best options?
