Here's the place to chat about all things classic. Also includes a feedback forum where you can communicate directly with the editorial team - don't hold back, they'd love to know what they're doing right (or wrong of course!)

Triplex Safety Glass, update 27-4-12

#1 Post by Jupiter8 »

If you own a British classic I'm sure you will be well aware of the 'Triplex' brand. It's was fitted to just about every thing made in the UK, Cars, trucks, trains and aircraft.
The brand name is no longer used on automotive glazing and is now produced under the name 'Pilkington NSG'. I have worked for Pilkington since the 80's, at what was the 'Triplex' factory in Birmingham. Some time back during one of the many factory changes I rescued from a skip a large old folder full of old advertising for the Triplex brand, loads of 60's & 70s classics etc.
So here are a few of them, if you like them I'll scan some more and put them on here 8-)

I love the one where the glass "pulls the crowds at the motor show". Now if that scantily clad young lady would shift to one side, they might be able to see what the fuss is about.

Just out of possible scant interest, to us slightly older blokes anyway, the legendary British radio comedian Kenneth Horne of "round the Horne" fame was the nephew of Austin Pilkington of the Pilkington Glass family and went on to be Sales Director of Triplex for many years up to the mid fifties.

Found a nice pic of a MK2 Escort from 1975 and Rover P6 with glass roof option from 1968. Enjoy.

Seeing that advert with the shattered screen reminds me of the time I was out with friends in a mk1 Escort & we got hit by a stone; the whole screen just crazed straight over! Possibly the scariest moment in my driving/passengering career, and that's including the time we barrel-rolled a Skoda Estelle...
…that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today.
If I was allowed a sigpic, this would be it
