USA S.O.P.A. law will effect everbody world wide

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

The worst part of SOPA is the methodology used behind the scenes to allow "removal" of websites from the internet. i.e. falsifying DNS entries on our nations DNS servers ... it's pretty awful that the government would stoop this low, but what do "We the people..." expect when we let special interest groups and lobbyists determine which bills are the most important.

Fun fact! There are a few states, Montana is the only I remember, that amended their constitution so that if Marshall Law is enforced they will succeed from the Union.

Ominous no?

If you have a google about you will see that even the copyright holders think this is a bad idea. it will be impossible to implement and prompt an alternative network (google darknet). It is REALLY easy to set up your own DNS server and run your own indexing service. Indipendants will start doing just that if the US try and force it through.

Are we seeing the end of Democracy as those who lived in the 50's and 60's knew it?
Australia already has strange laws like that in place right now . So far the only 'victims" have been those who seek out a particular type of porn on the web with many being arrested in the last 4 years.
Under OZ law you are guilty unless you can pay for the right to proclaim your innocence in a court as we dont have a bill of rights and we have politicians in place who refuse to allow us to have one.

I nicked this off LX Forum

]Do you guys want to know of a strange coincidence about all of this? Anybody who is of greek descent will back this up too.

THE SOPA and PIPA abbreviations are actual greek words:

SOPA (Σωπα) is the greek word for telling someone to be silent, quiet, and/or not to speak.

PIPA (Πιπα), literally means tobaccο pipe, but it is known and much more widely used for it's slang term which means Bl*w Job.

It's a freak coincidence, but if SOPA and PIPA have their way, we are basically being told to shut up, and suck it...

The SOPA & PIPA bills are put to the Senate on January 24 for a procedural test vote.
If they pass them, how long will it be before this site wil have to close?

As we are hosted in the UK, never.
It is a daft idea that is all but impossible to enforce. They take a site down or block it, it will take 20 minutes to get it up again somewhere else. Utterly pointless.
The americans seem to think they own the internet. Speak to someone resident in China about their great firewall. It takes moments to bypass and tracing owners of domains is also damn hard.
I won't go on and on explaining why this can't work but suffice to say you have nothing to worry about (if it passes which it probably won't as it is losing support rapidly).

Sopa and Pipa bills postponed in US Congress!!!

The US Congress has halted debate on two contested anti-online piracy bills.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid delayed a vote on the Protect IP Act (Pipa)
scheduled for Tuesday.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith then said his panel would
not consider the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) until a compromise was reached.

The decisions follow protests by online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, and thousands
of other websites, which went "dark" in protest for 24 hours earlier this week.

"In light of recent events, I have decided to postpone Tuesday's vote on the
PROTECT IP Act," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, said in a
statement on Friday.

Mr Smith, a Texas Republican, said in a statement: "I have heard from the critics
and I take seriously their concerns regarding proposed legislation to address the
problem of online piracy.

"It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the
problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products."
'Censoring the web'

Of about 40 co-sponsors for the Pipa bill, a handful withdrew their support on
Wednesday, as thousands of websites participated in a co-ordinated online protest.

Floods of emails and phone calls to congressmen followed the online protests,
prompting some lawmakers to withdraw their support of the measures.

More than seven million people signed a petition on Google saying that passage of
the legislation would result in censoring the web and impose a regulatory burden
on businesses.

Both bills focus on responding to online piracy, specifically illegal copies of films and
other media.

The bills would also outlaw sites from containing information about how to access
blocked sites.

If this is about online piracy, how is this, or any other discussion forum affected?

My only concern is that September the 19th won't be the same if the bill eventually gets to its next paper. :(

Nice one John!

I wonder if the Yanks actually need another law. Apparently they want us to send a Uni student to the US as he had a website that pointed people to various download sites, some illegal in the US. He's not breaking a UK law, but the Yanks are misusing the Extradition Treaty to suit their own purpose.

Guess which PM agreed changes in the Treaty a few years ago to help the fight against terrorism? I wonder what would happen if we wanted an American Citizen to stand trial here for a crime that was legal over there!
