Cast and crew had to abandon cars at roadside after being pelted with stones due to row
over ‘Falklands’ number plate

The Guardian Newspaper wrote:The cast and crew of TV’s Top Gear had to abandon their cars at the roadside and flee
Argentina after being pelted with stones by an angry crowd.

The attack happened after it emerged they were using a vehicle with a number plate
apparently referring to the Falklands war.

That vehicle – a Porsche with the registration number H982 FKL which some people
suggested could refer to the Falklands conflict of 1982 – was among those abandoned.

The BBC has denied any intended reference, saying the car was bought by a member of
the production team and was entirely coincidental.

A group of war veterans protested outside their hotel and one local politician said they
were escorted to the airport.

Juan Manuel Romano, secretary of social development for Ushuaia in southern Tierra del
Fuego province, said: “They have taken the decision to leave.”

BBC NEWS wrote:The crew of BBC's Top Gear are leaving Argentina after facing protests over a number plate
which appeared to refer to the 1982 Falklands War.

The team, including host Jeremy Clarkson, have been filming in South America for a Top Gear
special.

The show apparently provoked anger among locals by using a Porsche with the registration
number H982 FKL.

The BBC confirmed the show's decision to leave, but denied the offending car was chosen for
its number plate.

Andy Wilman, executive producer of Top Gear, said on Thursday: "Top Gear production
purchased three cars for a forthcoming programme; to suggest that this car was either chosen
for its number plate, or that an alternative number plate was substituted for the original is
completely untrue."

The team departed three days early after being denied permission to film by local authorities.

It was reported their cars had been abandoned by the roadside and the crew were escorted
to the airport, after being pelted with stones.

Clarkson flew into the country earlier last month to film a special which saw him and co-stars
Richard Hammond and James May drive the famous Patagonian highway - Route 40 - to the
southernmost city of Ushuaia.Reports in the South American press suggested the Top Gear
crew had left the country amid angry protests from politicians and war veterans, and demands
for their withdrawal from Argentina.

Final warning

Protests were held outside the hotel being used by the show's stars.

Juan Manuel Romano, secretary of social development for Ushuaia in the Tierra del Fuego
province of Argentina, said: "They have taken the decision to leave."

Why is this news? Shame on you, Manchester. I'd expect the Mail or the Express, in fact any of the worthless tabloids, to come up with this sort of tripe but in the Grauniad. Really? They should have left this one for the bog roll press.
The Mustang in the same feature in the show is bright green, let's all complain to our MPs because TG has tried to insult all those who are of Celtic birth!

Well would you really like to talk about the tories, lub dems, labour and ukip instead? me neither!

If the Argentine had a problem with number plates why didn't they object to them when the show
had put the forms in to the Argentinians when they applied for shipping and visas?

Because they wanted this to happen, and it would not be surprising if someone had after putting
the forms and shipping through then called the press and other protest groups to
"Have a go at them!"

But what is even more comical is that one politician apparently said the numbers on the other two
cars refers to those killed in the Falklands war!

Local councillor Juan Manuel Romano claimed the digits 269 on the number plate of the Ford Mustang
Richard Hammond was driving were close to the 255 Britons killed during the 1982 war.

He also said the numbers 646 on James May’s Lotus could be taken as a reference to the 649
Argentinian casualties.

255 isn't that close to 269. If it were, the post office wouldn't send their delivery staff out on foot. What a steaming heap of pure cobblers the whole thing is.
Yes, I'd prefer to open my paper and read something that matters whether that involves the obituary column or the dog results from last night.

At the end of the day it's propaganda, they do something controversial to get free publicity in all the papers and more viewers. I've never watched Top Gear in its new incarnation purely because to be it's no more bearable watching than this 'reality TV tripe' spewing out of America.

I did a DVLA check on the offending number (how sad is that?) and it appears to be genuine and on a Porsche 928. You'd think Clarkson and Co. would put their foot in it quite enough without people having to manufacture grievances.

Of course they knew what they were doing! TG is very tightly scripted, it has to be in order to appear so ad-libbed. I don't believe for one minute that Clarkson didn't know what was going on and what reaction they'd get. Does anyone really believe that it's a coincidence? Just as with the slope reference in the Burma show, it would have been pored over by producers, scriptwriters, Clarkson, etc.

I reckon they got the plate, put it on the car, and then planted the story in the Argie press....only it got out of hand. If the show had gone to plan I reckon they'd have thrown in every Argie cliche in the book, Porshe hitler car/Adolf Eichmann for a start, there'd no doubt be a hand of god reference, gauchos, Fray Bentos, the lot, up to and including the 1982 conflict. I know I would if I were a scriptwriter on the show!

Typical South Americans. They lost and don't like it. They invaded the Falklands. The folks who live didn't want them and still don't want them. I wouldn't have mattered what the reg was on that Porsche it was just a poor excuse. We should get a diplomat to explain it to the Argies. Something like "Listen to me you greasy bastards. You lost and got sent packing. Get used to it. OK?"

I should have been a diplomat.
