Can you get a VIN from a reg number?

I understand this a shady area, due to car theft and cloning etc but I have an MGB bodyshell with no V5 and no chassis plate. I have the reg number from the etched glass and when putting this into the DVLA vehicle check the description and colour matches the shell I have. Now I don't need a new chassis number or logbook as I'm using the car for a reshell. However I would like the chassis number as I need it if I ever want to find out the build date of it etc.
As yet I;'e had no luck in finding a way to get the chassis number from a reg number. The closest I got was if you look at a source coding from a reg enquire on a website, I was told it will give you the VIN and engine number but I couldn't find it. Does anyone have any ideas or does anyone work at a motor factors and can find out the reg for me?
Thanks

You could apply to the DVLA for a V5, that will have all the details. Sometimes VINs are stamped into the bodyshell at various points to help identify cut 'n' shuts, the usual ones being under the driver's seat and near the boot aperture, but I don't know how this applies to the MGB.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending how you see it) it is not possible for a member of the public to obtain a VIN number from a registration number. You need the VIN to apply for a V5 so your options are very limited. Your local constabulary can do it, as can the DVLA themselves so if you have a handy relative who works for either establishment, you could ask them to enquire for you.
If the VIN plate is missing you could have a look at post 6 here:

for a pic of where it should be stamped.

Most, if not all, MGBs will have a chassis number not a VIN. VINs and VIN plates were not compulsory until about 1981, so I'm not sure where you stand if applying for a V5 for an older vehicle. Asking a friend or relative to obtain this information is illegal and could land them in a lot of trouble.

Especially if they're a serving Police Officer. They'd be out of work by the end of the day and in a prison shower, being
table legged by a big, hairy bloke called Samantha by the beginning of the next!

If you have an account. Otherwise all you can get from them is the make and model.
