Marles steering box

Hello all.
MY Alvis TA14 has, I believe, a Marles steering box. There is about three inches of play at the top of the steering wheel. Sounds frightening but actually the car is easy ans secure feeling to drive, but I'm sure it should be better. I don't know anything about them. There is a slotted shaft on the side with a big locking nut. I assumed this was the adjustment. Slackening the nut reveals that the slotted shaft is 'in' as far as it'll go. Presumably there is not adjustment left. Can it be shimmed ? What do I do next?
