Can any help me. I disconnected the battery on my 03 reg Volvo S40 (It'll be a classic one day) and then realised I hadn't got the code for the radio.Doh! I have heard all these things about sticking it the freezer and that the serial number on it contains the code if you know which numbers they. I know this is not really classic car stuff but I've been on 'tinternet' and that was a waste of time so..er ..........help. Two months on I've got a sore throught from singing to myself. I only know one song all the way through and the sun isn't out at the moment and the sky is a grotty grey!

So how do I put the unknown code in or recode it?

The other option is to ring the Volvo dealer with your reg and chassis number and they should be able to obtain the code for you but they sometimes charge the earth

Almost as Ian said, but take it to your nearest Mitsubishi dealership as they charge less for supplying the code. This I know as a neighbour has the V40 - which as you'll know is the estate version - of a similar age and that was how we did it with hers after I'd had the radio out for a day or two to repair it. With hindsight, I could have replaced the appropriate chip when I was in about at it, so that it wouldn't have asked for a code, but that wasn't the fault she paid me to repair.

With Volvo being owned by ford, it doesn't happen to have a stereo that looks like this does it?

Go onto the VOC forum and find out about a guy called Rufe (real name Simon) who works for FRF Swanse (Volvo dealers) and is very helpful to VOC members - in fact anyone who uses the forum. He's well known for arranging codes for people for free, certainly worth a call. The main thread concerning him is here:

That will work so long as the car has the original radio it was fitted with from the factory.

I was about to point out that MW broadcast stations are all 9KHz apart in every country bar the Americas when I realised what you did there.... But it's a Belgian-built, Swedish-badged Japanese car so anything's possible.

Belgian built Japanese car.....Hmmm.....no wonder the bloody radio doesn't work?

My radio is that thing about 7" cube with a cassette player and CD player and radio in one. I'll try the Volvo Forum. I don't do main agents. They're a bunch of con men who get upset when you show them all the jobs on the service sheet they never touched but ticked off and charged for. A good mate who is the electronics bloke said stuff in the freezer and the chip forgets the code so it works without it. He's an electronics wizz kid. I don't understand much beyond basic electrics. I call in an expert when I need that sort of job doing. Thanks for the advice.
