I bought the cheapo compressor and this tool last time the ALDI offer is on.

Frankly, it would struggle to cut through wet newspaper.

I did think of just going and laying out for a decent make - but then I thought maybe the compressor's just not up to it and I'd be better off buying a new electric angle grinder.

Any tips/observations?

(I once cut up an entire MK2 Escort with a leccy angle grinder I bought for ten quid in a French Hypermarket)

I have two reasonably "powerful" compressors, the big one could run an air grinder/cutter all day without problems. However, I still use a mid-range electric 4.5" angle grinder and a cheap 9" one as well as electric sanders, drills etc. I find the electric tools are cheaper to buy; quieter to use - so don't annoy the neighbours so much - and a lot more convenient - I don't have to wait for the compressor when I am doing a a small job.

It's a bit different in industry: there's usually a large compressor there anyway; air tools don't mind water and the air keeps the dust out of the mechanisms.

On the other hand, I have all sorts of air tools I rarely (or never) use because it's a waste of time getting the compressor going just to tighten a couple of nuts, drill a couple of holes or put a pound or two of air into a tyre! Mind you, I did use the old compressor to blow the big tractor's back tyre up the other week (it's a 36" wheel and it would have taken quite a while using a foot pump!)

I'm not surprised you're dissappointed - air cutting tools are always a lot less meaty than electric, and with the cheap "ALDI" stuff you're experiencing the bottom of the range.

I use the air tools for light jobs, but yes, definately get the electric angle grinder, an air tool will never replace this.

Have you considered going the 110V route?

I still have a few 240V stuff that are either inherited or bought many years ago and refuse to break, but I found the £60 or so investment in a transformer very worthwhile. I am told that the 110V tools are not as powerful as 240V, but have not really noticed any difference.

I always try to get 110V now, unless the price of a 240V item is just too good to refuse.
