Barn Find DB6!

Hi all,

I know it's not very 'practical' but I pass a small car sales place on the way to work and this morning was surprised to see a DB6 in there. They usually have cars around the £500 to £5k mark, with the odd £15k one every now and then.

They weren't open when I was on the way to work, but I strolled up there at lunchtime to have a look.

The car's definitely been laid up for at least 12 years, the dealer reckons it's probably been more like 20 years. The car really is a 'barn find'. It has dark blue paint with that 'knackered old Land Rover' effect where it's peeling off and revealing the aluminium bodywork. The wire wheels are rusty, as are the bumpers (they aren't holed, so could probably be re-chromed easily enough). The interior's a bit scuffed and looks like it needs a clean.

Oh yeah, it's stuck in gear as well. But the engine does turn over apparently.

I asked the dealer where it'd come from and he said an elderly gentlemen had passed away with the DB6 and an E-type in similar condition. The E-type will arrive sometime during the week apparently.

He can't actually sell them yet as he's waiting for the will etc to get sorted out, but when he can sell them (in about 3 weeks time he thought) he'll be asking £75k for the Aston. He thought they'd probably sell the cars as a pair.

I can't work out whether that's massively overpriced or not - DB6s do seem to be going for absurd money at the moment.

Personally I thought it was really nice to be able to see a genuine, unrestored example. Most of the time you see them they've been restored to as-new condition and don't really look like they're very old.

If I had the cash, I'd love to get it up and running, but keep all the 'patina' and hold off respraying it.

Undoubtedly it'll go in for a £50k rebuild by someone who'll stick it in an auction hoping to get £200k for it.

Sorry - didn't get any photos as the dealer seemed a bit distracted (and I was clearly not able to buy the car). He said he's only had it a couple of days and hasn't advertised it but already has about 20 people interested in it.

I'm sure it'll pop up in an internet ad sometime soon.

it brightened my day anyway.

Mike

I feel sorry for those who aren't members of the David Brown Tractor Club! You won't get this quarter's magazine - with a barn find DB2/4 DHC on the back cover - and the story inside! Apparently Bonhams have an AM sale on the 19th of this month at Newport Pagnell:
