This is my Type 3 (Notchback) Imported to the UK from Frankfurt in 2004.

This car was firstly owned by the wife of a VW dealer in Germany. I am the fifth owner from new and the second in the UK.
I bought the car after a part rebuild, as the car had 'issues' and since I have had more modifications made.

The car now runs a detailed 1641cc engine with twin 40 Del's etc.. It also has an airide system.

It would be easier to answer any questions that you have on the car, than blather on!!

Type 3 only Bosch spot lights and a narrowed beam.

Flat 4 aircooled (pancake) motor.

Not bad for 47 years old.

What is an Austrian country buggy ?Never heard of one before,it looks like a trekker wirh 6v Beetle headlights.

Love the notch, love the KG, don't get the appeal of the nicely patinated and ever so slightly playworn thing though?

Possibly I'm at that "pipe & slippers" time of life. Please God not yet.

The Country buggy is the lowest volume factory built VW ever!

Less than 2000 built and very few survivors today. Originaly it was going to be a 4WD army 'jeep' but was pulled
and then got 2WD swing axle etc... and marketed as an all terrain vehicle for farmers in the outback.

The DAS badge... is that Der Autobahn Scrapers ?

No the DAS badge is the German automobile Association.

Not sure how usefull membership would be in Cornwall though!!

As for not seeing the appeal of the Buggy, It has a show quality pan and drive train and a fully detailed 912 motor running through a set of chopped pipes and sounds like this...

DAS is actually an insurance company, does legal cover that sort of thing.

ADAC is the main automobile association in Germany, of which I am a member (despite living in Scotland at the moment). 76 Euro membership, for the whole family to drive any car (of any age), anywhere in the world, no limit to the number of callouts, includes repatriation, legal cover in case of accidents etc. etc., so it is quite useful.

Don't know how useful the country buggy would be off road though with its 2" ground clearance

Of course you are right Karl. I was just writing and not thinking, something I do far too often!!

I have a ADAC enamel badge on the rear bumper and got confused. It's my age.

The buggy doesn't have any clearence as it rests on the pan. Just needed a small modification to get it that low. If it ain't scraping you ain't trying.

Australian, not Austrian.

The Country buggy was VW' Australia's half-hearted attempt at the beach buggy market and was loosely inspired by the wartime Kubelwagen.

The Trekker/Thing Type 181 was not sold in Australia, but the Country Buggy is similar and may have been the inspiration for the Type 181 later.

There are not many left as most were thrashed to death by farmers or surfing dudes. But the odd one still pops up for sale on eBay or the VW forums.
