Tyres - what does the panel think?

My car left the factory with 7.35 / 14 tyres. I have only ever driven one car with cross-ply tyres and it was enough to convince me they are a bad idea.

A previous owner has fitted commercial van tyres to my car - persumably on the basis that that was the only way to get roughly the right circumference. They really aren't that great, but the replacement "classic" sizes seem to be hellish expensive for a car that only does a few hundred miles a year. Another option would be to fit cross plies - and another would be to go to modernish 60 profile tyres.

What's anyone else done? I know 14" seems to be a really unpopular and therefore expensive size, but my chances of getting any 15" or larger wheels to fit at a sensible price with a stud pattern to fit are nil.

What's the car you are looking for new tyres for?
I have had no problem buying 145/14s from my local tyre shop to fit my mog (i did have to order them 2 days in advance). I think they are bridgestones and cost about £45 each. ESM have a range of 14" sizes from £25 but it is always worth ringing your local indipendant and asking for prices. They are normally a fair bit cheaper than the usual sheds.

It's an AMC Rebel - the wheels are 5.5 wide I think so I need something wider than 145s - it has 195s on the front and 205s on the back at the moment (not fitted by me).

Edit : thanks for the response by the way - appreciated. I googled ESM, they do up to 175 - but I think I still need a bit wider.

I've just checked out the website but they don't list the old sizes, does anyone know what 185HR15 would be in new size. Longstone want £240 a tyre and as i need to change all 4 on the jag its a bit steep.
Cheers

Thanks TerryG, I only do about 500 miles a year in the jag so don't want to spend a fortune on tyres.

Hi I know it's a radial but how about Uniroyals. Red label. 185 X 60 X 14. In my opinion a jolly good tyre and not that expensive.195's are £26.00 + vat. (I think that 185's are the same price but to be honest I haven't checked.).
Cheers.
Geoff.
