Is the Mondeo your idea for a cheap "camper van"?

I'd avoid a petrol Jeep if you are thinking of pulling a trailer. I had to use the firm's Cherokee to collect a "show trailer" from Carlisle (about 20 miles from where I worked) and had a full tank when I set off - and an empty one when I returned (and a very hot left leg from the autobox)! And no, I wouldn't recommend a Land Rover (of any form)!
I confess that, while I hate the Tonka-toy looks, my friend has a Delica that is a brilliant machine for him (three kids) and has just bought a newer one (Y reg) and been to London twice in the last month (the older daughter has just finished at Uni down there) - once with six people and luggage on board. It's a great 4WD machine too (he says)! The only snag with the new one is that it's white - looks like a "hotel taxi"!

I dunno, my petrol range rover was happy to tow the mog on a trailer at "outside lane speed" when I forget it was on. Mind you, if I drive it in a fun way, it gets 9mpg.

You should save the R18 4x4 if for no other reason than I had no idea they existed.
scrap the mini "jeep"
Buy the Buick as your next family run around. You would be the coolest dad at the school gates turning up in that

The Dacia Duster is a surprisingly able offroad tool, Terry, I wouldn't be quite so quick to dismiss that one as it's all made from preformed lumps of Renault 12 DNA and they never go wrong.

and as for that '50s Yank; yes, it'll be cool but do French people actually drive their kids to school? I thought that was only a thing in the UK - where walking ability is gradually being bred out with each new generation and buses smell unpleasant on the inside.
