finished the rear brakes today, all bled with new fluid and adjusted up (fluid will be flushed once the front and new servo are fitted) good handbrake and more to the point, i now have brakes! so the lack of brakes was somewhere between the rear flexi and rear cylinders somewhere.
once cleaned and tidied away, i did a little more compounding to the rear paintwork.
started off last week thinking i was going to machine polish the paint, following a bit of advice from a fellow enthusiast (grumpy) i have become slightly obsessed with compounding it by hand using only front to back action!
coming up nicely.
she gets turned round tomorrow and round 2 (front brakes and servo) starts

I assume you have changed the flexi hoses (I didn't notice anything mentioned) and case a beady eye over the "steel" pipes - it would be a pity not to change them while everything is apart and the brakes need bleeding anyway.

I was thinking of you when I washed the car today (I dry with a microfibre cloth - in straight lines). Mind you, it's a month or two since I last washed it - or to be more exact, went through a car wash with it!

yeah, flexi hoses are getting changed as i go. the 'steel pipes' have been changed previously and coated with grease. they are being cleaned off, again as i proceed, and checked over. so far so good. the new genuine lucas remote servo comes with new pipes in the fitting kit.
she will be washed when i get her out of the garage to turn her so i can do the front brakes.
front to back action only tho :D
my wife questioned why i have such a stock of microfibre cloths yesterday :D .. the cheek of it! shes very good tho, boil washes all my used microfibre cloths for me

had a good g3 session this afternoon (whilst the front caliper is soaking in degreaser and in between blasting the front brake backplate - gets boring)
looking like the car from the doors backwards will be fine just cut back and polished up. the front wings and bonnet are a disaster though, the previous owner used to tinker in his garage. one of the jobs he liked to do was rub a panel down and spray it up. he has done this pretty much to all the bottom panels inc the whole of the front wings and bonnet. the car has been stored in his garage since about 1986ish under blankets. looks like the moisture trapped has caused a reaction and little blisters (prob moisture in the paint/airline with no filter).
so, cant stretch to a professional repaint, gonna get a decent hvlp gun in the next few weeks and do the front end in cellulose. painted before but that was years back. way i see it is as long as i keep things clean and get enough paint on i will get a decent finish once wet sanded and cut back.
spoke with a good paint supplier in derby who can do a paint match for me if i take a small panel as a colour pattern.

What colour is the car, the paint code?
I`ve owned various Rootes vehicles and even now any decent paint supply firm can get a match from the original paint name/number, even Halfords! You will have to use Chrysler though, as I have recently to get Polar White for my Imp.

70 is Rootes Maroon, Berger Paints 404.1778 and you should be able to get a paint supplier to mix that without taking a sample in, won`t hurt to try, then at least you`ll get the correct paint mix and not just a closest match.

Been reading further on your thread and I see a few posts about your number plates. Personally, if the car had them from new I would leave them, and I`ve even retro-fitted these type onto cars that would`ve/could`ve had them but have lost them due to everyone and their dog fitting rubbish pressed ally show plates on anything with wheels.
The black type with raised plastic white or silver digits are OK if period correct, otherwise I opt out of the silver show stuff.

Nice motor for sure. I had a super Minx and a Sceptre that shape, but never a Vogue. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Good heater you`ve got there mate, but if you`re using the drum extension reel for long periods I would uncoil it or it will overheat!

cheers for that skipper.
the only reason i was going to get a paint match rather than just ordering off a paint ref is i am led to believe the shading will be more of a match?
as for the heater, its only ever plugged direct into a wall socket, extension is just for the odd occasion i need to use the grinder etc

Kev - If you have micro blisters there is only one way to rid yourself of them - the paint has to come off - if you flat back and paint over the top of the them they will appear in your new paint - you are right in your assumption in getting enough paint on - you should then be able to cut it back and obtain a decent finish but the skill is in not rushing - take your time with the preparation - I only paint in cellulose - so any questions you may have just post them up and I can talk you through it - then again I might just be being stupid  in assuming that you have never painted cellulose before

PS - same rule applies in the paint prep as for polishing - front to back only :D

Cheers

I fully agree, and it's why the Dolomite got a full respray rather than just the repairs done. It may not look like much, but should you ever find masking tape etc stuck to it you'll find this when you remove it!
