BRAVE or just FOOLISH RM RESTO

Post pictures and stories about your cars both present and past. Also post up "blogs" on your restoration projects - the more pictures the better! Note: blog-type threads often get few replies, but are often read by many members, and provide interest and motivation to other enthusiasts so don't be disappointed if you don't get many replies.

Must admit that it looked like one of those mid 50s stock cars in that last set of photos!

I reckon half of them cars started out better than the Riley currently is  So if I just finish the back end and throw the doors on I could have a fifties Stock car special, now that could save some work

Might be appropriate as some of that driving looks very familiar to some of that on the roads up here when the Dounreay lot change shifts............

  .... I drive over to the far west side [Workington/Barrow] only occasionally. BUT I know that when the Sellafield Crew are 'homewardbound' you need to take care on single track girder bridges, with traffic lights > > > GREEN for G.. oops! & another one  .. ;)

:D I used to work all over Cumbria on railway bridges and viaducts, Levens, Eskmeals etc. Fond memories of Corney Fell when the Sellafield lot let out, a bit like swimming against the tide................

Well, the usual around here, the missus went and got admitted to hospital a couple of times then ended up with her gallbladder out. So that was me on domestic duties again.....

But, I did manage to get the drivers bonnet on, unfortunately though it is quite ripply, I think it suffered accident damage at some time and was beaten back to shape, even with much time spent I'm not happy with it. It may come off again in the future, but it is one of those jobs that can be tackled when the car is actually finished so it will do for now.

(a bit dusty, but here she is)

I've also saved myself a lot of sanding having made a deal to repair a clock for someone in return for them sandblasting the front wings so I'm chuffed about that.

Anyway, time for a reality check as to how much still needs doing to the main body, so we turned her around ready for the rear end work and started stripping the bits off.

The rear window frame is going to need some joinery as its quite soft

Grotty inner arch and c pillar

Image

Boot floor needs plenty of new metal

Image

It is a little daunting starting the rear as there is plenty to do, so a little at a time and it will come together like the front. On the upside I found a "new" unopened can of duckhams oil from the late sixties along with an old tin of swarfega tucked away in a corner of the boot that proclaimed "For housewives and Grubby children too" which I rather like.

So, I decided to start with the passenger side inner arch and c pillar

Rot cut out and new metal welded in

This was followed by a good wire brushing

And a start at protecting it with my old favourite hammerite

So, thats one area nearly done, hopefully things will now keep progressing.

Hmm, Sellafield - I worked there for three months (IT support) and asked not to be offered a permanent job - you had to arrive half an hour early and leave an hour late to avoid the traffic!

Glad to see progress is being made - I was looking at a RME on eBay last night and wishing I could afford the £9K or so. I fear the value of a newly written off Mk4 Golf won't cover that! (the cobble I saw in the road is now two oil covered cobbles - I intended keeping the car another five or more years!)

I still think it would look good in DB "Chocolate" and DB "Orchid" white ;)
