It could have been one of those rare occasions when the French were on strike and we weren't so if they needed a car quickly they had no choice ;)

That'll be it. After all; France gave us wine that's almost as good as the Chilean stuff, beer that's almost as good as the Belgian stuff, cheese that's almost as good as the Scottish stuff and cars that are, erm... Oops, ran out of logic there. ;)

 As I once said before, I'll send you a cheque for a mahoosive quantity of millions of your currency of choice and you send me cash to the value of the difference between the actual cost of smuggling a bunch of old cars into the UK and the amount on the cheque.

Sooner or later you'll see that it's a rock solid investment.

That's the thing, it usually clears, and you think whooo, then it's found to be a fraud, is cancelled and the funds removed from your account, so not only are you goods down, you're cash down depending how much extra they've alleged to pay.

Do I come on here giving your trade secrets away?

Seriously though, could you not take out cash as soon as the cheque clears then instantly hide it somewhere?
