Re: New workshop
Our parking area and garage frontage was done in some horrible grey limestone by the original owners - whilst doing the lane I had the top 75mm reduced and used it for filling some of the potholes - I have just spent the last two days shovelling / barrowing & spreading the 10 ton of 20mm shingle that I had delivered from a local quarry Result is that it looks a lot brighter and gives the visual effect that the area is larger than what it physically is (on the down side I ache again - I must be getting old

Uh-oh, there's that Rich touting for work!
I like gravel and gravel-type surfaces on the ground immediately surrounding any buildings as it's as effective as a ruddy great alarm for alerting the occupants to the presence of the casual would-be mass murderer who may otherwise creep silently up to a window to get a clear shot with their assault rifle.
And it looks classy too.

The council won't let me gravel my drive
it has to have a "solid surface". because most people on my road do have gravel drives, there is always loads of shrapnel on the road getting flicked up so nobody is allowed it on a new driveway now.
Currently it is type 2 limestone but it will end up tarmac.
Saying that, yours does look good

Re: New workshop
Rich - No - the sub base is very well consolidated so I have just spread the gravel 75mm thick across the top of the base - I like it loose for the very reason that John states - you can hear anyone approaching the house or pulling on to the drive and has you say it's very good for drainagelooks lovely mate.. did you compact it?

Makes the bit down the side of the drive we've done today look insignificant! Mind, it's better now than the mud and weed patch it's been since we moved in.
