A 1974 Renault 12 estate in maroon - SFS 726N. Dad bought it new then moved to the south of France. He couldn't trade it in six years later as the steering wheel was on the wrong side, so I bought it for the price of a new stereo for his new Renault 18 estate. I kept that car for the next 11 years and it was immaculate at 17 years old and 134,000 miles (still on its original clutch). Sadly I was made redundant and couldn't afford to keep it garaged, so I gave it away through Practical Classics and I believe it is still with the guy I gave it to. He was planning to put in a bigger engine a couple of years ago.

Think we have done this one before but...

A 1971 Hillman Avenger 1250 which quickly gained a 1.6 Sunbeam S lump complete with twin CD 175s, big valve head and high lift cam.

It would anilate anything upto about 50mph, including 2 litre Capris and RS 2000 Escorts due to the stock 1250 box and diff. Only problem was that 80 was flat out, due to the afore mentioned 1250 'box and diff.

Leant it to a mate who "parked" it in a ditch after a few shandies

(photo damage giving the impression the paintwork was damage)

Overall,it was a decent car, apart from it overheating when travelling back to Manchester. Whilst in Italy,it got rear-ended,not too chronic to drive back to Germany, where I scrapped it. A sad day.

A green Trimph Herald estate - GTK 547F.

Bought for £125 and I had the outriggers and chassis to sort before it got the freedom of the road. Having bought it when I was 16 I did get it ready in time for me to hit the road when I was 17.

Didn't keep it too long and next bought Cortina MkII 1500 pre cross flow GTL529E.

Mine was a green VW1300 Beetle. It first saw the light of a Wolfsburg day in 1966, and I got my hands on it in late '72. Now when I watch shows with people restoring them I think "Yeah mine went there too!" because it had the full range of Beetle problems. I loved it though. :D

You're a bunch of young whipper snappers! My first car was a 1937 Ford 8. Passed my test in May '61 with father's 1934 Rover 12 sports saloon. The Ford was a joint purchase with my 16 year old brother and cost £25. the Ford lasted a couple of years until the back axle gave up the ghost. The Rover soldiered on despite being driven like the wind until Christmas '62 when we forgot to drain it and the block cracked. If I get the chance to buy another Rover the Wolseley will have to go.

An Austin Maestro 1.6 Automatic. Silver. Great car. Wouldn't start for a bit after a run, eventually wasn't economically viable to repair. I had to hold back the tears when it went! :(
