I agree the Civic has a staid reputation but it has from the very start been involved in Motorsport. The Yamoto Civic backed by Honda themselves won two touring car championships in Japan. A Mk1 civic even competed the Monte Carlo Rally in 1980. This fueled a heathly tuning aftermarket in Japan with companies like Yoshimura providing quad carb conversion and Bilstein supplying suspension upgrades. I wonder if had these been available to the UK market in the 1970's that the image and popularity of the mk1 civic would have been seen in a different light.
