 Funnily enough, she used to own a Herald when she was a student. Or was I thinking of Thora Hird's character in famous 1970s sitcom "Three pensioners and a bath with wheels?"

Sorry, I've not been back in the loft yet so still no pics of the Stellar!

Poppy is still off the road due to disappearing clutch fluid but I've made a start. As Kevin thinks it's the slave cylinder I'd decided to replace all the seals in both the master and slave cylinders and bought the seal kits accordingly. Removing the Master from the car was a simple job, helped by the fact that I've already removed the brake MC twice this year. The 2nd as a result of my ham fisted, heavy handed incompetence leading to a cross threading of the pipe union in the MC resulting in the need for the new MC and brake pipe detailed in an earlier post. (I promise to try to be more careful this time!) I also had previous experience of the working on the slave so, from the dubious comfort of my unpadded driver seat, I set about removing the gear knob, radio speaker, carpet, gear lever grommet, gearbox tunnel and insulating pad which was all much easier than trying to reach the slave from underneath. Once all that was done, the slave come out quite easily and both were taken home for re sealing.

The parts arrived and because I've learned my lesson, I wall papered the utility room in newspaper so Mrs FB wouldn't have an excuse to hospitalise me for inapproriate car maintenance within the household boundaries.

Once all surfaces had been hermatically sealed in this fashion, I set about the master cylinder and very quickly had a nice clean and resealed part ready for service. As this had all gone according to plan I set about the slave.

The "no longer available" metal cap was gently prised off with a big screwdiver and a pipe wrench with very little damage and set aside for reuse later. All the grease was removed followed by the circlip and the piston was coaxed from the chamber and rubber seal removed.

The work area was somewhat cluttered now so I decided to clear away all the greasy paper towels and no longer required parts and chucked it all in the wheely bin. This was shortly before I discovered that the slave cylinder seal kit did not include a new circlip like the MC kit did! As none of my usual stockists sell this particular part, I had to decide whether to just buy a new slave or to wade through the wheely bin to find the old circlip.

Well a new slave cylinder is 30 quid and as regular readers will know I am terminally skint so I waded through the 10 days of rubbish in the wheely bin.(2 weeks between collections!!) After an hour of this unpleasantness, I finally located the cirlip which had, of course, worked itself to the very bottom of the bin!

I was lovingly cleaning the circlip as I walked back into the utility room where I promptly stood on and crushed the "no longer available" metal cap which had rolled un-noticed onto the floor. I may have said some bad words as I was cleaning up before going to order a new slave cylinder.

PS. Does anyone know how to get news print off of utility walls?
Mike.

Oh dear! looks like you will need to do a little miniature panel beating to reform the 'no longer available' metal cap?

Resealed clutch Master Cylinder fitted along with a new Slave. All bled through and Gearbox tunnel carpet and radio all refitted. As I could now change gear, I went for a nice sunny ride in the surrounding country side.

I also stripped down to the frame my £6 ebay seat ready for rubbing down, respaying and re-cushioning. I might actually have a comfy Triumph seat by xmas for the 1st time ... ever!

Kevin,

it all looks simple in priciple and stripping my "spare Seat" has tought me how not to do it with covers that I want to keep

I needed a spare frame as a fatbloke has sat in my drivers seat and bent it!

The plan is to rub down and respray both the frames and replace everything except the covers so watch this space! I'll even try and remeber to take photos of the process.

lack of funds is forcing me to do it myself and just think of the sense of achievement when (if) it all works out. :)

They are not usually too difficult to take a appart, the only problem can be getting them back together with new foams, they often seem to be stiffer than the originals, hog rings are also a bit of a fiddle without the right pliers.
Also if possible work on them indoors in the warm, the vinyl is much more pliable and easier to stetch.

Having done this job myself a couple of times that's a top tip. Important when doing repairs/replacement on soft tops and dashboards too, or anything made of vinyl come to that.
Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Thanks Chaps for the sage advice.

Remebering Mrs FB's previous objections to me working on bits of cars in "her" house, I shall print these off as evidence! My defence shall be "Well they said I had to! Take it up with them."

I suggest you leave the country (or maybe the planet) now. ;)
