Early Javelin Restoration

I cleaned back the old mounting, made up new support brackets prior to welding the mounting on to them then rewelded the mounting complete with support brackets to the car

Just the welds left to dress up and that's another area ticked off the list - (not that many left on the list now )

Peter - the cars owner has been over from Switzerland for the last week to attend the international rally of the Jowett Car Club, along with Keith they concentrated their efforts on testing the engine & gearbox for the car. These were both rebuilt by a specialist in Germany last year - this was built from a spare that Peter obtained (the original will be rebuilt at a later date) - so the test frame was slightly modified and the engine & gearbox mounted

And once some minor tweaks had been made - it started and ran up well - the starter & dynamo have to be checked over / painted and a new modified water pump is currently being built for the car but other than that it's all ready for going into the car once the paintwork is completed

Sheer brackets - which were a later factory modification were made up and fitted for the rear shock absorber mountings

We are going to have a reshuffle of the projects over the next few weeks and need to make some space - so various parts are being brought together so they can go off to be sorted - All the chrome was checked to find out what was damaged / missing etc before being sent for rechroming - the front & rear window trims were badly twisted & dented but we had sourced a suitable set off another car - they still require rechoming but are straight - I went through the box of over riders that we have to hand - all damaged / dented in some shape or form

Keith carefully cut the rear mounting brackets off them with the angle grinder so that I could access the rear in order to reshape them

With the bulk of the dents tapped out with my chisel tipped panel hammer on to a flat faced dolly - I then dressed the face up with a course file - then a little more dressing with the hammer before finishing with P80 production paper on a block

Once straightened up the rears were shot blasted and the brackets readied for welding on although I had to make up a new bracket for one of them

Welded up and ready for fresh chrome

A few of the chrome strips had suffered various dents and knocks - these are now quite rare to obtain

With some very careful tapping out from the rear

and then the P80's with a block and some care the following result was obtained

You cannot really see it due to the glare on the image - but all dents / knocks were worked out and the trim is ready for delivery to the chomers

This is the rear seat squab upstand - the battery box sits immediately underneath it - it looks like battery acid has somehow eaten its way through the upstand

The car must have been run with no covers over the cells on the battery so that the acid splashed up on the upstand - hence the damage

Is that a flat 4? what capacity is it?

It certainly is a flat 4 / boxer engine and quite a successful one - 1500cc capacity - this little engine powered both the Javelin & the Jupiter to many wins including Le Mans throughout the early 1950's
