breakdown truck

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

I believe that BL went tits up because Michael Edwardes had such big ears. These impressive lobes were so massive that they not only kept his tiny brain in the shade so that it wouldn't grow, but also acted as blades for removing the sand from the hole into which he'd eventually come to stick his head.

Or possibly it was something to do with the quality of the teabags in the canteen?

Triumph motorcycle combo please. All sidecars should look like that though I have a small reservation regarding the structural integrity of basket material.
The Renault Estafette is such an underrated thing, that one looks like a really sad bloodhound who's been waiting in the kennels for years but always gets ignored as visitors take the cute dogs home instead.
And the DS, wow! it looks as though something's not quite as it should be but what? Ah yes, no tyres on it. Pffft, that's no bloody use, you'd have to take spares or trailer it home.

I'd buy it on the strength of that promise and on that alone! Definitely the sort of eBayist I could trade with, too many pedals though. Oh, and I don't want one, but if I did, then that would be it!

On the star ratings for eBay item desirability. Scale is as follows: One star means that the thing concerned is about as desirable as having your toes sucked by a corpse, two and three are showing some promise, four is a sort of "I'd buy that just to see what all the fuss is about" thing, but not too lustful. Probably. Five star items in the cars section include but are not limited to: Peugeot 505 GTi autos, 1984 Lada 1500 Kombis - RHD pre-Riva shape and yes, that Daewoo is a deeply desirable vehicle and no, I haven't been on the mushroom tea, that thing is as cool as either a Cavalier or a Toyota Carina 2, IMHO, but slightly more so?
But nothing is as cool as an early Hyundai Stellar, a Talbot Tagora, a Renault 14, a pet elephant, a VW Santana (remember them?) or a Skoda Favorit van, the one that was based on their estate shell and had twin opening rear side doors. I loved that car the first time I drove one. It may have been slow on paper but its engine was just so happy to be revved and it actually handled pretty nicely.

Before we get into the politics, Jaguar wasn't rescued. Lord Stokes, the head honcho of BL was determined to acquire all the British marques. Once he got his hands on Jaguar, down the slide they went. It was John Egan who sold Jaguar to Ford for £1.8 Billion. Ford thought that the public would buy a Jaguar badged Mondeo. How wrong could you get? I will grant you that Aston Martin have always overstretched themselves and would probably sunk without trace had it not been for the choice of, and the subsequent success of, the James Bond franchise. But here's an interesting post script to Lord Stokes' empire building. He did all he could to bring the civil engineering manufacturer, JCB into the BL fold. He failed, today JCB are one of the best success stories in our manufacturing sector. In one sense you are right, it's that greedy empire building, power lust, that causes the downfall of once successful companies.
If MG had been hived off to someone who ran it the way it was, it would still be in British hands and be as successful as Morgan. We can't have that though, can we? Got to shift volumes. Anyway, enough waffle from me, I have something for you, and for John too, heaven knows how I did it, but at a classic show today I was admiring the view through the windscreen of my car. Oooh, look, a Healy 3000, Aghhh, a Corvette, Ooooh an MGA.

Then this monstrosity photobombed me. What is it, aghh, I don't believe it. The shadow is the brim of my hat.
Image
Following the car's outline, I thought that I might get a photo of it's, I can hardly type this, Marina badge.
Image
Horror of horrors, I got your photo, but look into the background, look right behind the, oh no, I've got to type that word again, behind the Marina. Can you see a white van? It's a camper, converted from a van. Brace yourself:
