V6 into a RHD Chrysler Neon mk1

Post pictures and stories about your cars both present and past. Also post up "blogs" on your restoration projects - the more pictures the better! Note: blog-type threads often get few replies, but are often read by many members, and provide interest and motivation to other enthusiasts so don't be disappointed if you don't get many replies.

I would be carefull wiring the two togeher, connecting them together will back feed the high speed circuit which could damage the ECU or cause other strange effects.

Another option is to ignore the ecu control of fans all togeher and fit a seperate thermoswitch.

You run the risk of backfeeding anyway because the if the power is cut when the fan is spinning quickly, the motor acts as a generator and feeds power back in. That's why it's better to use relays.

True, unless he is planning to tow a 2 ton caravan up a mountain pass in 35 degree ambient I very much doubt 2 fans are needed anyway, personaly I would keep it simple and just wire up the primary fan via the low speed output and a relay with a manual override switch.

The current fan wiring is all neon, the pulse option on the relay control wire(yes thats
how the neon system worked the high low speed option on the solid state relay) isn't
there but it still switches the fans on when the low speed signal is sent as that is
what I connected the relay to and the fans go on(not sure if it's on full).

Also the original neon/voyager fans were not one high and the other low like the
intrepid, but similar to what I have just installed(but not able to be used as push or
pull only pull) This is why I asked the question rather than and hoping I won't have to
rewire the wiring loom of the car as it would mean a job getting the battery tray and
fuse board, transmission ecu out to get to it! The solid state relay is fixed to the
thick metal of the battery tray as a heat sink and it makes easy access to the relay
pug and relay it's self.

Regarding the question of insurance, please remember that as I am diabetic and
disabled this make my insurance higher than most, add in unemployed too! and it
may or may not be a case of the engine swap doesn't matter as some diability vehicles
usually have one or two mods for access and use.

That's true, but [WAVs for example] should be grouped in exactly the same as their base vehicles, an engine swap is a different kettle of fish.
Most insurance companies will keep premiums to a minimum for people with notifiable conditions who receive the high rate of mobility allowance from either DLA or PIP so it's possible that someone without would need to pay even more. ;)

I don't get mobility anymore,as they lost the forms (or say they did, and all the
subsequent ones I've also sent in!) And dla, well they tried that but a discrepancy
I get the same amount as DLA but it's called something like income biased
allowance or something!! (So get the feeling that they are cutting me off slowly!)

Okay here is a link to a thread that has recently been started by someone else
"question regarding solid state radiator fan relay operation"

http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?f ... ead#unread

So you can get an idea what I'm dealing with!

If the original is pulsewidth controlled then connecting 12v to it is the same as 100% pulsewidth, ie the fan full on, you can use it like this, the fan just won't be on for long and will be a bit noisier.

Looking at the Intrepid wiring diagram again, it appears that the control unit applies a negative (ground) to start the fan as the relay coil is backed by a 12 volt supply, but it's not clear whether the solid state relay in the neon uses the same mode of operation. The safest solution would be to ditch the solid state relay and use a mechanical one.

Thanks for looking into the fan issue for me, it will go on the back burner for the
moment, due to what I found today!

The rockauto temp sensor arrived today so the minute the rain stopped it was up
with the bonnet. She was fighting me every step of the way, it looks like the gear
selector cable and leaver are causing problems, by not putting her into park. then
the leaver wouldn't stay in first or park. I will need to remove the metal framework
that is the battery tray, fuse box and transmission ecu mount.(and the wiring loom
is wrapped around it!)

I managed to get the car into park and get the bloody v6 to crank but would not
fire up properly, and when she did it was for a few seconds at a time and asthmatic
before dying! Another battery flattened.

The old saying "you wait ages for a bus, then three come along at once!" has just
happened with mk1 neon temp sensors, a lot of 13 new temp sensors for the same
price as just one temp sensor, and the p&p was almost £10 cheaper than rockauto.
I couldn't resist and at least I will have a spare
