In the past I used to shrug my shoulders at the bolshy french unions, but nowadays I have a grudging respect for them. It seems OK that the world's richest companies can hide their loot and dodge their taxes. It's OK too for the world's bankers to bring the financial sector to it's knees, and with it, everybody else, and not one corrupt avaricious greedy corrupt merchant w.anchor is brought to book, but when the workers at the bottom of the food chain demand rights, well, we can't have that, can we?
I've always wondered why the most famous of all things french is called The Cancan. I suppose Can'tcan't just doesn't have the same ring to it.

meanwhile they are talking about a general strike soon & power cuts.... maybe soon they will make france like 70s britain

Is there any updates on this situation Rich? I have a group of friends who are planning a Normandie trip at the end of the week. They go every year, it's to the remembrance service for the fallen of D-Day. I have already passed your heads up to them, now they are wondering if they need to take additional fuel in cans.

Hide it well, they can confiscate any excess loose fuel on which their duty hasn't been paid.. Officially, you can carry a maximum of 10 litres, but this is academic since you can't take cans onto the crossings.

Dammit! It was as recently as 1981 when I crossed that way on a creaky tub filled largely with (other ) drunken yobs, taking full advantage of the relaxed drinking laws found in international waters!

OK, so maybe North Shields to Rotterdam would be a better idea? That one still runs.

Or Harwich to Hook of Holland, depending on where you're starting off from, otherwise the best bet is to choose the crossing that lands you in France the nearest to where you want to go and fill the tank in the UK.

for the moment you can get fuel.. the queue have gone but carry a petrol can just in case.. if you are going to normandy i would use portsmouth/caen, le havre, cherbourg or st malo.. less time driving from the north of france..

Well, my friends all set off yesterday for Normandie, whether or not they have stashed fuel and supplies I know not. But I do hope they get back safely, one of them owes me fifty pence.

from what i have seen fuel supplies are back to normal.. but as the lorry drivers are on strike firms are laying off staff as the cannot get raw materials.. oh and paris has got wet feet..
