For the budget, and considering a dodgy back, a low slung sports car may not be the easiest to get in and out of. How about considering a classic saloon, maybe a mk2 Jaguar, Rover P5B, Austin Westminster etc. Can't beat a bit of wood and leather!

The biggest issue I would have with the back problem is getting in and out of something that is very low ! I do like Jags and would prefer a convertible.

How about a nice Triumph Stag? They did have well known problems, but once sorted, they were a good car with a beautiful engine (much nicer than the Rover V8).

Yes, you could do a great deal worse than one of these but with any back problem forget the XJS as they're one of the lowest things ever to get into and out of. I had to drive one that belonged to the chairman's wife when I worked for Greenstar Leisure and even though I was nigh enough fully mobile in those days, getting in and out was difficult, especially as it was a hardtop so the door aperture had to be negotiated gracefully (no stepping straight in and then worrying about how to get the legs under the dash as you could with a convertible). Don't get me wrong, XJS are very fine cars once you're in there, but even a Lotus Seven has a more easily accessible seat.

Proviso's: A lot of shotty ones out there that have been used for budget wedding hire and thraped to death. With provonance and a good history on them (probably an independant Rolls specialist at this time of life) could do worse

Probably not a first classic, but can be bought within the budget

I have discounted the XJS but what about the XJS HE V12 Convertible ? Does this present the same problems of accessability ? My back generally causes me greater problems during the colder winter months (I don't plan to drive the car during this time). Am I correct in assuming that a convertible is easier to get in and out of, with the exception of a Range Rover ?
