The big problem is that as gumtree gains popularity, the bargains will vanish as more users means more competition. You could get a bargain on QXL / eBay / Yahoo auctions years ago but now some items go for above retail!

I love ebay- there are idiots and timewasters, yes, but I managed to sell the kids big old trampoline for more than it cost new because a couple of people got carried away in a bidding war for it, and a couple of months ago I bought 11 big old iron cored neon sign transformers, all still working, for about thirty quid the lot

....they certainly were! I'm future-proofing by stocking up on these now,.....They'll run all day in a short circuited state, great if you mess with high voltage stuff: jacobs ladders, tesla coils, etc, but they're being superseded by horrid solid state switch mode things- same as they're putting in microwaves now, much safer but somewhat boring, a bit like modern cars really!

I really try not to use evilbay for selling unless I have explored every other alternative with no joy. Far too many timewasters who never bother to contact you after winning, or expect you to give them the item after they've won it.

Only once have I had some one refuse a cash deal on an auction, so I said well good luck, and went and bought something else. If someone turned up on my doorstep waving cash for something I was selling I'd do the deal no issues. Too much of a risk waiting for a non paying bidder to win, then dick you about for a few weeks, then having to relist and repeat to fade.

Gumtree works well, although there are a few dodgy characters on there too with offers too good to be true.

I went and looked at a Beetle advertised on eBay. Very clean, rust free, current RWC (MOT), six months registration. A bargain at the price. But the guy would only sell it through eBay, her refused to end it early.

That was before we had smart-phones. By the time I got home somebody else had pushed "Buy It Now".

My pet hate with eBay is the wackers who cannot read. I've sold items with PICKUP ONLY, WILL NOT PACK OR POST, only to have the buyer contact me afterwards wanting me to pack it and drop off at a courier. Or worse, deliver it to a mate 200km away.
