The country buggy was never developed for the beach buggy market.
The size and weight would have been prohibative as it is an all steel construction vehicle. The Clayton factory (VW Aus) was after something in the way of an amphibious go anywhere vehicle. They also where toying with the idea of military use.
The Trekker was already on the drawing board when VW Australia sent one over to Wolfsburg.
The thing that hits you straight away about the country buggy is it's huge box section construction which is far larger and heavier that the weedy looking Trekker/Thing.
Many of them died at the hands of farmers in Australia, when the vehicle was marketed at them.
The frame head was the weak link and broke on many after a short but abusive life.
