holiday?

i have heard people mention holidays.. from what i understand instead of working they take out large loans to stay in mobile torture chambers by the sea.. or even worse they go to centre parcs & bankrupt themselves.. no i don't understand it either...
although with any luck i shall spend a weekend with wife & kids in the vendee at a great little hotel & eat & drink myself silly
