breakdown truck

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Rich, the summary version of how to use a basic OBDII reader. plug it in. press the button to read codes. write the codes down. look them up online.
Handy sites:
http://www.trouble-codes.com/
http://engine-codes.com/
http://www.troublecodes.net/
http://www.obd-codes.com/

or just google the code.

If you want a hand held reader, that is as "good" as any generic one. there are manufacturer / model specific readers which will give more detail but nobody who does DIY on ECU equipped cars should have a cheapo reader to give them a guide on problems.
Personally I have one of these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Interface-V1- ... 0722531793
Which I use with either my laptop or an app on my phone.
If you aren't confident using your smart phone with one stick to the hand held reader (phones don't like being used with oily hands).
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

Rich, bad news, there's no OBD/OBD2 software available for your phone! That statement is based on the assumption that because you're a builder by profession, your phone must be one of these bad boys:

Either I'm getting old, or the definition of the term "vintage" is moving, but I found it quite strange that any mobile phone qualifies for either the V word or a site dedicated to the early models.

Awwww, isn't that the cutest thing! Front wheels maybe a little close together but I'd drive one.

And I never thought there'd be a legitimate opportunity to say this on a forum that isn't Autoshite, but thanks for posting a picture of that extremely hairy chatte Française.

Rich won't be able to see it but this was "another chance to get what I want" when I clicked on the Lada auction in another thread.
So was this:

If it exists, you will find one on ebay sooner or later.

Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

Ooh, Nice Fergie and yes, of course a Bond Minicar is so similar to a Lada that I totally understand eBay's logic. :|

Well they both have 4 wheels.........

Given the choice of the Lada or the Bond as daily transport, I would take the bus. I bet the Bond gets more attention at a car show.
