If you want a hand held reader, that is as "good" as any generic one. there are manufacturer / model specific readers which will give more detail but nobody who does DIY on ECU equipped cars should have a cheapo reader to give them a guide on problems.

Which I use with either my laptop or an app on my phone.
If you aren't confident using your smart phone with one stick to the hand held reader (phones don't like being used with oily hands).
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.

Rich, bad news, there's no OBD/OBD2 software available for your phone! That statement is based on the assumption that because you're a builder by profession, your phone must be one of these bad boys:

aww ive always had a soft spot for cats like that since we took one on as a rescue.. she was god awful ugly but such a nice moggie.. sadly she was attacked & killed by the local feral cat..
