That gadget is what I have but my one has been altered to work with medium and high speed OBDII (it's a ford thing)

Mines a 2003 TDCi Ghia facelift Terry. The fault code the reader gives is P0270, which relates to the output speed sensor. Oddly, there's a new one in the packet in the glovebox. However, to change it means gearbox out and stripdown, as it's located by 2 bolts on the inside of the diff. This pops up again not long after clearing, but you can clear codes, switch off etc, then next time you check it says no codes stored, but lights still on. I would have taken the bulb out when I replaced a blown dash one, but it's an LED. Amazing what a square of insulting tape can do 
I know there's this F-Super you can get, which I may invest in, as it may work with the S-Max too, but knowing my luck, probably not!

Have you tried FORScan to see if there are any hidden codes? If you are using an ELM327 then there is a mod you can make which will allow it to read the individual ECUs within your car as well as the main one. There may well be a powertrain fault code keeping the warning light on. (I have a switch on mine to go between HS and MS. HS for normal use and connecting, MS for accessing each ECU)

I think I've seen something about a mod, does it involve taking the unit apart, soldering something in and adding a switch to the side?
I assume you have to make the mod before the BT adapter will connect with Forscan?

FORScan will connect without it and should clear the standard messages but you won't have access to the other ECUs within the car without making the mod.
FORScan is free so it costs nothing to try it and see if you can get away without any soldering.

Thanks Terry. If I can get ye olde laptop to turn on, I'll give it a go, it has built in BT, so connects no bother, new lappy doesn't, and I have no adapter.

That's a bugger. You will have to invest a few £ in a Bluetooth USB doodah from the bay of e.
I have loaned my adapter to half a dozen people so far this year, The most popular thing to do seems to be to turn their ford in to an "eco" version (it turns on a graphic of a plant growing on the LCD bit of the dash, you drive well and the plant grows, you drive like a teenager and it shrinks, etc). I only made my adapter to stop the seatbelt chime for there being someone in the passenger seat without a belt on as I usually have my laptop bag on there so it set the warning off.

Ahh I've heard of that eco thing, but I think our S-Max is too old for it, even as it has Convers+
The passenger seatbelt chiming away seems to have stopped on just the passenger side on the Smacker, still OK on drivers side, and the Mondeo has no warning at all, so I assume it's been deactivated by plugging the seatbelt in 9 times within 60 seconds after turning the ign on. There is no seatbelt warning light on the dash at all.

If your dash is the type with 4 rows of text on the LCD (I think it was introduced in 2007 but is backward compatible) then you can turn it on, if it is the earlier type with 2 rows, you can't.
My Focus is an 05 and has a 2 row dash, I can't say it is a feature I was overly interested in but I do have a later dash ready to fit as and when I am feeling rich as it requires a trip to my local locksmith to re-program the keys after it is changed.
